James Harwood joined Virgin Media and also the telecommunications industry in 2009 on a service technician apprenticeship. Over the next few years, he progressed his career into Network and Business Field engineering roles, doing everything from building and maintaining HFC and TDM based networks to working with high speed data solutions, and also our core and access fibre networks. In June 2017, he was co-opted onto the Executive Committee of the SCTE.
In 2015, James had the passion to give back and wished to enable others and successfully secured a role as a Technical Trainer in Learning & Development supporting Business and Networks. His skillset includes:- enabling capability via a blended technical training approach (e.g. practical labs, field based, classroom, virtual classroom and digital), on a broad spectrum of topics including FTTP, Optical Fibre Transmission, HFC and Telephony Network Planning and Build, Health & Safety. James also maintains his expertise and support for cutting edge technologies such as DOCSIS 3.1, VoIP, FTTP and new network data solutions, such as SDN and higher bandwidth rates, as they are rolled out within Virgin Media, and this is supported through the knowledge of fellow members of the SCTE and the engineering community within Liberty Global.
James has been instrumental in the uptake and application of the SCTE courses offered via Broadband Training Limited across Virgin Media and, since his involvement, has supported several hundred Engineers to gain their certification. Finally, he also plays a large part in supporting apprenticeships within Virgin Media and has arranged for the SCTE to get more involved with the future members of the telecommunications industry as they embark on their careers.
